The girder and header span table titled “Alternative to IRC Table R502.5 (1)”, which is an approved South Carolina modification to the 2003 and 2006 International Residential Codes, is no longer valid and should not be used. The span table used the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau’s 1991 published design values. The Southern Pine Inspection Bureau’s recently reduced these values, in some instances, up to 35% of the previous values. As such, Builders Engineering, is recalling the girder and header span table.
Girder and header span lengths using the new values should be available on our website in the coming weeks.
